* * *

Back in her room, Jamie finally let the tears flow. She hugged a pillow close and sobbed. It was Christmas Day, which made it all feel worse. She’d awoken in the arms of her ideal man—a man who had made her feel things she’d never felt before. They were supposed to spend the day together. It would have been perfect.

It had all been ruined, of course, by reality.

Their night together had been nothing but an illusion.

Those feelings he’d awakened in her? Illusions, all of them. Or delusions.

Truth was, he was a player. All men that good-looking were. They could have any woman they wanted. The world must look like a candy store to them, with every variety to choose from and consume. He hadn’t even had to ask Jamie if she wanted to spend the night with him. It had been obvious, a given. Of course. Why wouldn’t it be? A man like Wyatt was a panty-dropper. Women must throw themselves at him all the time.

And now Jamie was in that category as well.

His long-distance girlfriend thing had probably worked well until now. He could have his cake and eat it, too.

Jamie wondered how many times he’d used that line—“So what are we going to do about it?”—on other women besides her. Probably many, many times before.

She’d fallen for it. She was the biggest fool who had ever walked the planet.

She let herself sob it out for a good long while. Then, finally, she pulled herself up and went to the bathroom. She turned on the shower, and then stepped under the hot, steaming spray.

The water felt good, as if it was cleansing her sins away. She could only hope.

Trouble was, she didn’t feel as guilty as she probably should. Travis hadn’t crossed her mind at all until now. And still she felt nothing.

Maybe it was finally, truly over between them. Her heart had moved on. But it sure as hell wasn’t going to attach itself to Doctor Wyatt Tremaine.

No, he’d been good for one night, but that was all. A perfect one-night stand.

When her shower was finished, she dressed in her ski clothes. Eff Wyatt and his supposed doctor’s orders. She was going to do what she came here for: ski and enjoy her vacation. She was damned if she was going to let another man ruin Taos for her. She hadn’t purchased a nine-day lift ticket for nothing.

After she was dressed, she called the front desk and had them connect her with the ski-valet service. They told her that her skis would be waiting out front for her.

She trudged to the elevator and pushed the down button. When the doors opened, a tall man with brown hair was standing inside.

Travis!

“Jamie,” he said, rushing out and taking her in his arms.

She pulled back and stared at him in shock. “Why are you here?”

“I was able to grab a flight with another airline. I didn’t want to miss spending Christmas with you.”

He looked so cute and sincere that her heart clenched in guilt.
